Chelmsford Durable Power of Attorney
Having a power of attorney document on file is a major component of any comprehensive estate plan. Ideally, these documents will never have to come into play. However, if you are ever incapacitated for any reason, having someone you trust in charge of your decision-making is important. These documents can provide you with peace of mind and serve as a sort of insurance plan should the unthinkable ever occur.
At the Law Office of Peter V. Lawlor, PC, we help people throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire plan for the future. Our Chelmsford attorney has more than 30 years of experience that he will put to use when drafting your durable power of attorney documents.
We are prepared to help you craft a comprehensive estate plan. Contact our lawyer online or call 978-656-1827 , toll free at 800-585-3039, to arrange an initial consultation to discuss your situation.
What Is a Durable Power of Attorney?
A power of attorney simply grants an individual of your choice the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf when you are unable to make such decisions. For example, if you are injured in a car crash and are in a coma, the person you name as your power of attorney will be authorized to speak for you. A power of attorney is considered to be durable if it is still effective following an incapacitating event.
Powers of attorney can be as broad or as narrow as you like. You may wish to name a person you trust to only make financial decisions on your behalf. You can also grant a medical power of attorney to a trusted individual to make medical decisions on your behalf, similar to a health care proxy. We can also create limited powers of attorney. For example, if you are scheduled to undergo surgery, you may wish to grant someone power of attorney until you have recovered to the point where you can make your own decisions.
